Check your credit.

Plain and simple: you need good credit to buy a house. If you aren’t deemed “credit worthy,” you’ll be denied. Just because you pay everything on time every month doesn’t mean your credit is stellar: The amount of credit you’re using relative to your available credit limit, or your credit utilization ratio, can sink a credit score. So, just make sure to check your credit score and give yourself 6 months to fix a score that you aren’t happy with.
